Thunderbolt 4 Rackmount and Tower Industrial Computers from DuroPC — With Full PCI/PCIe Expansion
#product-newsRackmount computers with a Thunderbolt interface are hard to find. DuroPC offers several, in 2U, 3U, 4U and tower configurations, each keeping the PCI and PCIe expansion slots that industrial and test-and-measurement systems depend on. The circled port on the RX1715 family's rear panel is Thunderbolt 4. Engineers who buy a rack-mounted industrial computer usually need two things at once: the expansion slots to host their data acquisition, motion control, frame grabber, or avionics bus cards, and the fast external connectivity that modern test equipment now expects. Thunderbolt is the connection many newer instruments use, but it is almost never offered on rack-mount industrial computers. DuroPC does. A DuroPC 4U rackmount computer. This article expands on our earlier overview, Enhancing Industrial Computing: Unveiling the Power of Thunderbolt 4 , with the specific systems, the engineering behind them, and the instruments they connect to. DuroPC Computers with Thunderbolt 4 DuroPC offers Thunderbolt 4 on three processor and slot configurations. Each configuration is available in several chassis sizes, so you can match the computer to the rack space you have. 15th Gen Intel Core Ultra — Thunderbolt 4 ports built in Expansion: 2x PCIex16 (5.0), 3x PCIex4, 2x PCIex1 4U Rackmount — RX1715-4 3U Rackmount — RX1715-3 3U Front I/O Rackmount — RX1715-3-FIO 2U Low Profile Rackmount — RX1715-2LP Tower — TX1715 12th/13th/14th Gen Intel Core — PCI slots for legacy cards, plus Thunderbolt 4 Expansion: 2x PCIex16 (4.0), 3x PCIex4, 2x PCI 4U Rackmount — RX1712-4 3U Rackmount — RX1712-3 3U Front I/O Rackmount — RX1712-3-FIO Tower — TX1712 12th/13th/14th Gen Intel Core — PCIe Gen 5 expansion with Thunderbolt 4 Expansion: 2x PCIex16 (5.0), 2x PCIex4, 3x PCIex1 4U Rackmount — RX1714-4 The RX1712 family is the one to look at if your system still relies on conventional PCI cards. It combines two 32-bit PCI slots with modern PCIe expansion and Thunderbolt 4 in the same chassis, which is rare. Thunderbolt 4 on the board Thunderbolt and PCIe Expansion Slots, Together Thunderbolt connects your computer to external instruments. PCIe and PCI expansion slots connect it to the cards inside. DuroPC computers provide both, so a single system can talk to a Thunderbolt-connected PXI Express chassis while also hosting the data acquisition, motion control, frame grabber, avionics bus, or timing cards your application already depends on. PCIe expansion slots, the internal connectivity that DuroPC systems provide alongside Thunderbolt. To see the kinds of expansion cards DuroPC customers have used in our systems, visit Expansion Cards Used by DuroPC Customers . Why Thunderbolt Is Not Just a Card You Add It is tempting to assume that any computer with a free PCIe slot can gain Thunderbolt by installing an add-in card. In practice it is not that simple. A Thunderbolt add-in card does not connect to the computer through the PCIe slot alone. It also needs a dedicated Thunderbolt header on the motherboard, a small multi-pin connector that the card is cabled to. The header is not a universal standard. The card and the motherboard have to be designed to work together, and the board's firmware has to support it. Only a small number of motherboards include it, and most industrial motherboards do not. What the header does. Thunderbolt is more than a fast data link. The Thunderbolt controller has to coordinate with the computer's chipset and firmware on things that a PCIe slot does not carry, such as recognizing when a device is connected or removed while the system is running (hot-plug), sequencing power, and handling sleep and wake. The header is the sideband connection that carries those control
Do Modern Industrial PCs Still Have a Parallel Port?
#technical-guidesThe parallel port disappeared from consumer motherboards a decade ago. It never disappeared from the factory floor. CNC controllers, EPROM programmers, older test and measurement benches, label printers and software licence dongles were all built around IEEE 1284. The equipment outlived the interface. When the PC driving one of those machines finally dies, the problem is rarely the application — it is finding a current computer that still has somewhere to plug it in. Why a USB-to-parallel adapter usually is not the answer This is the fix most people try first, and it is the reason they end up calling us. A USB-to-parallel adapter presents itself to the operating system as a USB printer class device. It does not create a port at a real I/O address, and it gives software no direct register access. Anything that expects to talk to LPT1 the old way will not see it: Legacy DOS and early Windows software that writes directly to the port address Timing-sensitive control loops that toggle individual pins Custom drivers written against the hardware rather than against a print spooler Licence dongles that probe the port directly If the application was written to print to a printer, an adapter is usually fine. If it was written to control something, it usually is not. How DuroPC provides a parallel port The parallel port is integrated in the main chipset and accessed through an onboard pin header, which we bring out to a standard DB25 connector on a rear I/O bracket. It is the board's own port, at the address software expects — not an emulated one. The same bracket commonly carries the DB9 serial port, which is the other interface these installations tend to need. The standard base I/O addresses for a parallel port are 0x378 (LPT1), 0x278 (LPT2) and 0x3BC . Software written against the hardware expects to find the port at one of these — which is exactly what a USB adapter cannot present. IEEE 1284 defines several operating modes, and which of them are available depends on the specific board and its BIOS settings. Tell us what the port has to talk to and we will confirm the supported modes on the exact machine before you order, rather than after. Industrial computers with a parallel port Every machine below lists a parallel port in its own specification, and most offer the I/O bracket as a priced build option: R160-209 — 1U rackmount, for a standard cabinet S810-4P2I — 4x PCI and 3x ISA, for the oldest card sets SHB160-105 and SHB160-109 — 6-slot backplane systems SHB160-110 , SHB160-111 , SHB160-116 and SHB160-208 — 8-slot backplane systems If the machine you need is not on this list, ask anyway — the port is frequently available as a build option on other models. Tell us what it has to connect to The useful conversation is not about the computer, it is about the equipment on the other end of the cable. Tell us what the parallel port has to drive and which operating system the software needs, and we will confirm exactly what is required before anything ships. Get in touch or request a quote.
Choosing a TAA-Compliant Replacement That Keeps Your Existing I/O
#technical-guidesA TAA requirement narrows the list of machines you are allowed to buy. It does nothing about whether your interface card works in one of them. Those are two separate reviews, and they fail in different ways. A procurement review that passes tells you the purchase is permitted. It does not tell you that the 1553 card from the rig you are replacing will enumerate, that the driver has a build for the operating system the new machine ships with, or that the card physically fits the chassis. Those are engineering questions, and the time to ask them is before the solicitation closes. The processor is rarely the problem When a machine that drives test or production equipment finally dies, the application almost never needs a faster CPU. What it needs is the same set of interfaces, at the same addresses, under a driver that still loads. That is where generational change bites: ISA is gone from current chipsets. A card set built around it needs a backplane system rather than a modern motherboard. Conventional PCI and PCI-X survive on specific boards and expansion backplanes, not as a default. PCIe lane counts are not interchangeable. A card needs a slot with at least its lane width, and some physical slots carry fewer electrical lanes than their length suggests. Serial and parallel ports are frequently an onboard header brought out to a rear bracket, not a connector you can assume. Driver availability moves independently of the hardware. A card that is electrically fine can still be unusable if the vendor stopped building for the operating system you are required to run. What the clause does and does not settle Where FAR 52.225-5 applies, the contract generally calls for U.S.-made or designated-country end products, subject to the clause and the offer. Country-of-origin rules include substantial transformation; an assembly location alone does not establish eligibility. What follows from that is narrower than it first looks. Eligibility attaches to the configuration supplied , not to a model number — so the same machine can be quoted in an eligible build and an ineligible one, and the expansion cards, storage and accessories are part of what is being judged. A card you supply yourself is your own end item to account for, not ours. The practical consequence for a replacement: the TAA requirement and the compatibility requirement constrain the same build at the same time, and resolving them separately is how a machine arrives that satisfies one and not the other. Start from a model and request a configuration review Cards we have on record The interfaces that bring most replacement work to us are the ones with long equipment lifetimes behind them: MIL-STD-1553 and MIL1394 / AS5643 avionics databus cards NI MXI-Express and PXIe host adapters , for controlling an instrument chassis from a rackmount host GPIB instrument control , where the programs that own the bench outlive several generations of controller Multi-port serial , ARINC 429 , frame grabbers , timing and synchronisation and reflective memory Each family page lists the specific cards, their part numbers and the platforms they run in. If the card you need is not listed, that is not a no — it means we have no record of it yet, which is a question rather than an answer. Ask both questions in the same email The slow version of this is two sequential reviews: a procurement decision, then a compatibility surprise. The fast version is one message that lets an engineer answer both. Send the card details — exact part number from the label, bus and slot, operating system and whether it can change, driver version and where it came from — together with the TAA requirement from your solicitation and the origin or compliance documentation your purchasing team needs. What to send for a compatibility review We will come back with what we have on record for that card, what would need testing, which machines are candidates, and what documentation is available for the build — before you order, rather than after.
